Grad Session Outfit Inspo – What to wear!

Outdoor graduation photos in the Rio Grande Valley are for the brave! Between the extremely warm weather, golden sunsets, and outdoor campuses, your grad photos have a unique look, and your outfit plays a big role in that.

Whether you’re graduating from a local college or university here in the RGV, these outfit ideas are designed to help you look your best and stay comfortable.

1. Cap & Gown – The Essential Look

This is the one you don’t skip. Your cap, gown, and any stoles or cords represent everything you’ve worked for!

What to wear under your gown:

  • Black or neutral dress
  • Dress shirt + slacks
  • Heels, sneakers, or boots

RGV tip:
Take some photos with your gown open, this lets your outfit show while still keeping that classic graduation look.

2. Light & Airy – Perfect for RGV Sunsets

The RGV sun can be strong, especially during daytime sessions.

Outfit ideas:

  • Light pink, white, cream, or soft tones
  • Flowy dresses or breathable fabrics
  • Sandals, heels, light-colored boots, or white sneakers

Why it works:
Lighter colors reflect sunlight and give your photos that soft, glowing look, especially during golden hour.

3. Clean & Professional – The Career-Focused Look

Great for grads stepping into their careers.

Outfit ideas:

  • Blazer + dress or slacks
  • Scrubs (for healthcare grads)
  • Clean, polished outfits

Pro tip:
Bring something that represents your field, like your stethoscope (medical), violin (music), or any items to tell your story.

4. Western Look – The South Texas Touch

In the RGV, boots just make sense.

Outfit ideas:

  • Dress + western boots
  • Cap & gown + boots combo
  • Neutral outfit with statement boots

Why it works:
Boots add personality and give your photos that authentic South Texas feel without being over the top.

5. Casual + You – Keep The Look Relaxed

Not every outfit needs to be formal.

Outfit ideas:

  • Jeans + a nice top
  • Sneakers or boots
  • Simple, comfortable outfits

Why it works:
It gives your gallery variety and helps you feel more natural in front of the camera.

6. Recap – What to Bring to Your Session:

  • Cap & gown + stole/cords
  • 1 dressy or professional outfit
  • 1 casual or personality-based outfit

Optional BUT Recommended:

  • SANDALS OR CROCS! We will be doing a lot of walking on campus, so you should bring your sandals or Crocs to change into while we move around campus for photos.
  • Props (diploma cover, items related to your major, etc.)
  • Water (RGV heat is real)
  • A towel to wipe off sweat or blot off shine (again, that RGV heat is real)

Grad photos in the RGV have their own look: warm, bright, and full of personality. Your outfit should match that. Dress it up or keep it simple. Wear the boots or the heels or the sneakers. Just make sure it reflects your journey and everything you’ve accomplished.
